Breakfast Sausage Kolache

I have to say it is going to be quite fun introducing family and friends in the UK to many of the delicious dishes that we have loved from the US.  This past weekend I introduced my family to a very Texan breakfast of Sausage Kolache.  And I must say they were a hit.

Breakfast Sausage Kolache
1 cup warm milk
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 egg yolk, beaten
3 cups bread flour
1/2 tablespoon salt
3 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup white sugar
3 teaspoons bread machine yeast
24 breakfast link sausages (or 18 chipolatas)
3 hot peppers, minced fine
2-3 oz of cheddar cut into 24 quarter sliced slivers

First thing that is important to note, if you are using sausages that are not pre-cooked you must cook them before you assemble them into your dough.  For a healthier option I choose to use the oven to grill the sausages, however this can be done in a frying pan.

In the order suggested by the manufacturer, place milk, egg, egg yolk, bread flour, salt, butter, sugar and bread machine yeast in bread machine. Select Dough cycle, and press Start.

Preheat oven to 190 degrees C (375 degrees F). Lightly grease a large baking sheet.

On a lightly floured surface, punch down dough, and divide into 36 pieces. Roll pieces into balls. Arrange balls in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart. Allow balls to rise 15 to 20 minutes.

Flatten balls, and make a depression in the center of each. Fill each with 1 piece of sausage, pinch of jalapeno and 1 quarter slice of cheese. The amount of jalapenos really is up to personal taste as to how hot you want it to be. It can be left our entirely if you want.

Bake 15 to 18 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned.
